Choosing a 3, 5 or 8 Year Ceramic Coating

The three coating tiers trade gloss against toughness, and all of them depend on how well the paint is prepared.

Choosing a 3, 5 or 8 Year Ceramic Coating

Ceramic coating gets sold with a lot of big promises, and the choice between a 3, 5 and 8 year coating can feel like picking between three versions of the same bottle. They aren't the same. Each one is built from a different chemistry, each trades gloss against toughness a little differently, and all three share one requirement that matters more than anything else: the paint has to be properly prepared first.

What a coating actually does

A ceramic coating is a thin, hard layer that bonds to the clear coat. It doesn't replace wax so much as outlast it. Urban Auto Detail lists the benefits as durability, hydrophobic behaviour, enhanced shine and help with resale value. Hydrophobic means water beads and sheds, which on a truck that lives on gravel roads means dirt has a harder time clinging and the next wash goes faster.

What a coating doesn't do is make paint bulletproof. A stone thrown up on a rural road can still chip a coated panel, and a coating doesn't remove the need to wash the vehicle. Think of it as a harder, slicker surface that's easier to keep clean, not armour.

The three tiers, as Urban Auto Detail offers them

  • 3 Year Coating, built for endurance: a graphene coating that's resilient, with slightly less gloss than the other two.
  • 5 Year Coating, the king of gloss: SiO2 and SiN, giving a high-gloss, mirror-like finish.
  • 8 Year Coating, the best of the best: SiN, SiC and SiO2, with a slick wet-look finish and the toughest protection of the three.

Reading that list in plain terms: the 3 year is a sensible pick for a work truck or a daily driver that sees gravel, where toughness and value matter more than the last bit of depth. The 5 year suits an owner who wants the deepest shine, such as a dark vehicle that's washed often and kept in a garage. The 8 year is for someone who plans to keep the vehicle a long time and wants the strongest layer on offer.

Those are guidelines, not rules. The year numbers describe the service life each tier is built for, and how long a coating lasts in practice depends on how the vehicle is driven, stored and washed. That's why aftercare instructions come with the job.

Why a light polish always comes first

A coating seals in whatever is underneath it. If the paint has swirl marks, light scratches or leftover contamination, the coating locks them in under a hard layer, and fixing them later means removing the coating. A coating also needs a clean, properly prepared surface to bond to. That's why Urban Auto Detail always includes a light polish for adhesion, whichever tier you pick.

Their coating process runs in four steps. First, a wash and decontamination, using clay and chemicals to pull off bonded dirt. Second, an inspection under special light with a paint thickness check, which tells the detailer how much the paint can safely take. Third, a machine polish. Fourth, the coating itself, followed by aftercare instructions so you know how to wash it going forward.

When you need more than a light polish

A light polish is about adhesion and clarity. It isn't a full correction. If the paint has deeper swirls or scratches, you can step up to paint correction. The 2-Step Correct, from $699 and about 7 hours, uses a cutting compound in step one and a polish in step two, and a ceramic coating can be added to it.

The quote form for a coating asks for your vehicle, the level of paint correction you want, the coating, whether you want a glass coating, and optionally a rim coating. That lets you sort out the combination before anyone gives you a number.

Add-ons worth pricing at the same visit

Glass Ceramic Coating starts from $99 and takes an hour: a hydrophobic coat on the windshield and glass that helps visibility in wet weather. Leather Ceramic Coating is $149 for a coupe or sedan, $169 for a truck or SUV and $199 for a seven-seater, and protects leather against stains, UV and cracking. Headlight Restoration is $119 and takes about 2 hours, removing oxidation and yellowing. Doing them together saves a second appointment.

What to know before you book

Ceramic coating is quoted by estimate rather than a posted price, and the job takes about 7 hours, with up to 8 hours possible on the longest jobs. Because the polishing and coating need a controlled space, you'll need a garage or other enclosed space, plus access to water. A deposit is taken at booking for coatings and paint correction. It's non-refundable, but it can be transferred to a rescheduled appointment if you give advance notice. The rest is paid when the work is complete, by cash, card or e-Transfer.

Urban Auto Detail travels to High River, Okotoks, Diamond Valley, Nanton and South Calgary with no travel fee. To get an estimate, call or text (403) 973-2143 and say which of the three tiers you're leaning toward. If you're not sure, describe how you use the vehicle and where it's parked, and take it from there.
